CHOOSING YOUR SAFARI LODGE

Have you been daydreaming of going on an African safari and having your first encounter with the Big Five (Cape buffalo, rhinoceros, elephant, leopard, and lion)

As you begin researching your safari adventure, you will find that African lodges can be either ridiculously expensive or alarmingly rundown (cheap). Rates for a five-star luxury safari lodge can cost thousands of dollars per night with no guarantee of sighting the big five.

I have compiled a list of factors to consider which can help you make the correct choice for your style and budget.

  1. Safari lodge aesthetic

Some people are into minimally styled camps, while others love the luxe life, this comes down to personal preference. Whatever your preference be sure to have a close look at the main lodge. This is where you are likely to spend most of your time. In many cases, there’s no Wi-Fi and, sometimes, no power in the individual rooms so guests tend to flock to the communal spaces of the lodge for meals, drinks and a relaxing place to chill out between game drives.

a) Most people are unaware of the difference between National Parks and Private Game Reserves. National Parks are government owned and offer a range of budget accommodations including camping and self-catering options. Private Game Reserves are as the name states privately owned and run. Accommodation prices vary greatly but they are almost always more expensive than National Parks.

b) Depending on what your style is, what makes you feel the most at ease and relaxed after a day of exciting guided game drives, will influence the type of lodge you. choose. If you like authenticity you may choose the traditional bush lodges that have viewing platforms around the lodge or a swimming pool to cool off in the hot African bush. There are also options for an outdoor shower/bath.

c) The number of days you are looking at spending on safari would also determine your choice of Africa safari lodge. If your stay would be limited to only a few days, the best would be to have a look at a lodge that would offer you not only a great game viewing experience but that is also located in the best area to ensure that you get to see as many of your bucket list wildlife. If you are spending more time you may consider several lodges as game parks span hundreds of kilometres and you may experience some unique sightings.

2. Safari lodge service

Safaris are often a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you don’t want it spoiled by less-than-stellar service. Looking at the reviews of several lodges before you make your decision is useful as there may be things you haven't considered that may be important to enjoy your trip.

3. Game viewing

When it comes to African safaris, the “Big Five” are what most people are after and most properties will state on their websites how many of the big five they host. Some parks are noted for showing some of the more elusive species. Some offer unique viewing opportunities, water-based safaris, dune surfing in some of the world’s most unusual desert locations or hot air balloon rides.

4.Safari lodge accommodation

There’s quite a wide variety of the types of safari-lodge accommodations available. Do you prefer an open-air tree house, tented /glamping accommodation or classic old-style lodges? Sky beds and treehouses are a fun way to see Africa and connect with nature. This is usually an add-on experience that isn’t available at all safari lodges. s WIFI a must-have for you? Or do you prefer to be 'off the grid? What is the purpose of your safari? Do you require family-friendly suites, some lodges are strictly above 12 years of age. Honeymooners and couples seeking privacy during their stay can enjoy a host of options at adult-only accommodation.

5. Conservation at safari lodges

safari is so much more than just a vacation. When you are looking for a safari lodge, be sure to look up their conservation efforts. A quick gauge is that if they are not giving back to the local environment there is a good chance they could be hurting it. Proper management of camps and parks is imperative if we want these natural environments to exist in years to come.

6. The Costing

staying at safari lodges that are amazing and indulgent comes at a steep cost but is usually all-inclusive so you know upfront what you are paying. Modestly priced lodges are usually not all-inclusive, so you might end up paying more for extra activities and alcoholic drinks. They also tend to be more crowded. A good sign is when the safari-lodge website explicitly states how many people will be on game drives.

7. Location and time of year

Where you want to go and what you want to see will determine the season. Spring and summer are usually when you can see mums and babies. It is also the rainy season and there is the consideration of malaria-affected areas. Optimal wildlife viewing is during the winter months. The considerations here are peak season so very crowded and considerably more expensive. Prices will also vary considerably depending on the country and location of the safari. Most of the reserves also charge a fee. More famous or special parks will be more expensive. Travelling in the shoulder seasons can save you money and is a good option for the budget-conscious traveller. But if seeing the wildebeest migration is high on your list expect to pay a lot more.

8. The reputation of safari companies

There are hundreds if not thousands of safari companies. Some are good and some are bad. Do your homework and research your top choices.

9. Safari camp safety record

You are not going to a zoo. There are very deadly, wild animals that will become your neighbours while you are on safari. You will also be quite far from a doctor and/or hospital should you need them. What are the camp safety protocols? Do they have any type of barriers or fencing to assist with security? Do they employ guards? Do they have rules for nighttime walking and mechanisms in place if there is an emergency? These are all very important questions that must be asked and understood before you book.
